Guide

HYROX vs CrossFit — what's the difference?

Both are hard. Both build serious fitness. But they're built for different things, and once you see the format you'll know which one fits you. Here's the plain-English version, from a HYROX Affiliated Training Club here in Blenheim.

The short answer

HYROX is a fixed-format fitness race: 8 x 1 km runs alternating with 8 functional workout stations, scored on total time. CrossFit is constantly varied functional training — every workout is different and includes Olympic lifting and gymnastics skills.

Which one should you choose?

  • Pick HYROX if you want a clear race to train for, you already enjoy running, or skill barriers (Olympic lifts, gymnastics) have put you off CrossFit.
  • Pick CrossFit if you love variety, want to learn Olympic lifting and gymnastics, and you enjoy the unknown of a new workout every day.
  • Do both if you can — they complement each other. CrossFit builds capacity and strength; HYROX gives you a measurable race goal to peak for.

FAQ

Is HYROX easier than CrossFit?

Not easier — different. HYROX is a fixed, endurance-heavy race. CrossFit is varied and skill-heavy. HYROX has a lower skill barrier so you can race sooner; the work itself is hard.

Can I do HYROX if I already do CrossFit?

Yes. Your engine carries over. You'll usually want extra running volume and specific work on sled push/pull, burpee broad jumps and wall balls under fatigue.

Do I need Olympic lifting or gymnastics?

No. HYROX has no muscle-ups, snatches or clean & jerks. It's running, sled, sandbag lunges, row, ski-erg, burpee broad jumps, farmer carry and wall balls.
